Rose, "Rosebud" as she was known in her early years, was born in Stillwater, OK on August 9, 1927 to W. Edgar and May C. Walls. She had two brothers, one sister and six years later another brother. Their large family included 3 step sisters and 3 step brothers as well. Rose went to school at Big Brewer Elementary near Chimney Rock Hollow in Salina, OK. Her high school education was in Pryor where she lived with a family in town taking care of their young son which turned out to be a good working opportunity for her. When her family moved to Oregon; Rose and her sister moved to Alameda, California, where she worked as an usher at a movie theater and at a soda shop. She met her beloved, Al Melder, at a bowling alley. Al was in the U.S. Navy stationed in Alameda along with her two brothers.

Rose and Al married June 11, 1945. After his discharge, they moved to his hometown, Houston, Texas. Although now a long way from home, her new family welcomed her with lots of love. They lived in the West End area and attended West End Baptist Church. They started their family with daughters, Carol and Patricia (Pat). Rose worked for J. Weingarten's grocery in the meat department. Al worked for J. Weingarten's grocery too.

After Al's store transfer from Baytown in 1954, they bought a home on the north side of Houston in the Wild Rose Gardens area and added to their family with daughter Cindy and later son Chris, living there many years. The family was a member of Rittenhouse Baptist Church. As Rose enjoyed bookkeeping tasks, she began a career in banking working at Allied American Bank and Northwest Bank & Trust. Al advanced in the grocery business as store manager. Later they moved to the Bluebell Farms area to be near Al's family where they enjoyed fishing and swimming in the lake behind their house, plus hosting many family BBQs, where Rose excelled grilling her famous brisket.

After their retirements, Rose and Al had a house built in Magnolia where they could enjoy their hobbies away from the city and spend time with their larger family that grew to 7 grandchildren and currently 5 great-grandchildren. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 11, 1995.

Rose loved sewing projects, making quilts for family and friends, cooking family dinners (including more BBQs serving her special brisket), watching the Astros, traveling to visit out of state family and fun outings with the Red Hat Chicks of Cypress. She frequently drove to Louisiana with her best friend, Margaret Stafford, to try their luck at the slot machines. Al was known for his unique birdhouses, other wood-working projects and a beautiful yard.

Rose is preceded in death by her beloved Albert L. Melder on January 22, 2002 and their daughter Cindy Melder Bickford on January 14, 2005.

After Al's death, Rose moved to Cypress where she joined Cypress United Methodist Church and enjoyed numerous friendships. When it became more difficult living by herself, she recently moved to Silverado Preserve in the Vintage where she benefited from their resident care and social activities.

Last August, Rose celebrated her 90th birthday with a party attended by family and many friends.

Rose was recently hospitalized with a pneumonia infection and unfortunately was unable to regain good respiratory strength.
